Home Learning at Southmere

At Southmere Primary Academy we would like to support all families by creating opportunities for pupils to lead their own learning at home.

Home Work Menu

Each half term pupils will be provided with a menu of activities linked to their current topic. These will be sent home with pupils in their homework books as well as posted on the school website. Home Learning for Pupils – Southmere Primary Academy (wearesmile.com) Pupils are encouraged to complete some of these activities at home (at least one each week) and return them to school where their efforts can be celebrated. Parents and pupils are also encouraged to upload any of their child’s home learning onto Class Dojo as part of their individual portfolios, particularly any work that doesn’t require a written response.  Teachers also offer challenges during lessons to encourage pupils to research and discover new facts and develop new vocabulary and skills.

Reading

Children bring home reading books daily which are matched to their Phonic Reading Level .  They are also encouraged to choose another book from the class Reading Challenge box which features key books to read in each year group.

Key Stage 2 children also have access to Reading Plus, an online reading programme with proven results in improving children’s reading ability. Each child has unique log on details that are located in their Reading Records. Please click on the link below to log in:

Parents and carers are encouraged to read with their child on a daily basis, this can include a range of books and magazines from both school and home.  There is great value in re-reading books, particularly in the early years, so reading books will not be changed daily.  We would hope to see a minimum of four parental signatures in pupil’s reading records each week. Evidence of home reading will be rewarded with ten Dojos each time.
